The Flip Side of Social Media

Ways to avoid the fishbowl

I think we all want to believe that social media is this powerful tool whose only purpose is to bring people together and allow you to connect with anyone from all over the world. However, something so positive can only lead to something so negative.

Society has clung to the idea that social media and technology are these amazing features that keep getting better and better. However, is that always a good thing? Is it a good thing that because technology keeps advancing, these databases that store our information know everything about us? Like my mother always says, it is like we are living in a fishbowl. Everyone can see in from all angles, there is nowhere to hide and no way out.

Looking back at my parent’s photos from the 1970s (the hippie time), life seemed much simpler.

Is that because they did not have cellphones that allowed them to constantly be connected with someone? Is it because society is so addicted to their phones that they do not realize the negative effects of social media? Is it because social media is such an easy way to compare your life to many others?

Or does social media have nothing to do with the world that seems more complex and more divided than ever?
